Happy Birthday E.A. Poe

I almost forgot that today is Edgar Allan Poe's Birthday .... HAPPY BIRTHDAY E.A.
Such an inspiring writer...whose words can warm your heart or chill you to the bone . I have always had a 'thing' for artists who suffer for their work or because of their work... some call it suffering, I call it dedication of the soul. Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec , Kerouac, Poe...and so many others. Think how different our visions would be without their dedications to the soul.
And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted - nevermore!

Best wishes to him. One of my favourites authors too. My Dad was his fan and he suggested me to read his works when I was a teen. Love at first reading. Have a nice day Rosanna

I loved this poem long before i knew it's author. Real chiller and leaves you longing to get to the end like good writing always will. Not being a Poe fan i tend to delve in an out of all types of writing and only have one firm favourite. He is Alan Bennett and in his eccentric typically British way (sometimes mundane)i can’t get enough. To me he is the most fascinating person alive and long for his new books as and when they are published. If you ever get the chance you should read Lady in the Van. An amazing book that gives an insight into the rather sad, sometimes funny way people become what they are and what made them that way. Makes me laugh and cry no end, and even though I must have read it 20 plus times it never fails my need to read something great.
Talking of Van Gough, I am so happy to be able to go and see part of his collection soon and can't wait.
Love the painting in your previous post too. I see a ski slope at night.

I don't know a lot about Poe, just the little bit most people do I suppose. The Raven, and I'll confess I associate that mostly with The Simpsons. But hey don't knock it, Homer does a dang decent read of the Raven. ;)
I was inspired by your reminder of Poe's birthday to go look up the full poem and read it. Delightfully dark and spoooooky, a little sad too.
Then I had to go listen to James Earl Jones read The Raven cause while Homer does a good job James Earl Jones' read gives me goooosebumps!

I live near Baltimore on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Poe is buried in Baltimore and each year a mystery man brings a bottle of Poe's favorite libation and deposits it on his grave. No one to this point has discovered who the mystery man might be. This year our mystery man was mysteriously absent and his absence made even bigger news than his yearly "appearances". It will be interesting to see if he returns next January 19, or if someone else takes up the tradition.
