Almost Forgot...

Debie Lyons of 'Piskies and Poppets' left a post about our quail eggs and how she raised them from time to time from eggs... and it got me to thinking (and I am ashamed to admit I almost forgot) to mention that back in 2004 while standing out in our driveway saying goodbye to my cousin...a tiny tiny little furry ball ran across the driveway...it actually looked the a furry tumbleweed the size of a walnut....had not a clue what it was. Then it came back to the edge of the driveway and stared at us...it was a baby quail...no older than an hour or two. With no parents in sight and the sun going down...this little creature...(who obviously was last to hatch...and the others moved on) was totally defenceless against what the night offered it.... so we gathered her up and made a comfortable place for her inside...complete with heated box and various gathered bugs. Our plan was to find a home the next morning for this little fellow...but over night between spelling one another in our all night vigil a bonding occurred ....between all 3 of us... So for the next week we cared for this little baby and loved every second of it. It seemed to really respond to us and our voices. We got little done over the next week...except watch this baby grow and gather bugs. When I finally called to see what else we were to feed the baby...we were promptly told that it is against the law to house a Wild Game Bird... and that we must turn it over to the Arizona Game and Fish Dept. of risk heavy fines and jail time.... WHAT!!!!! They even said if you don't..we will trace your call and come to your house... all of a sudden I felt like we were housing John Dillinger!! So sadly and reluctantly... we took our baby to the AZ G&F Dept... where they release into the wild after it has grown...sniff sniff....

So every quail I see ...I think it may be an offspring from our little Peep!

Just thought I would share....

Oh bless Jodi, fancy having to give the baby quail over to the authorities. Poor little thing. At least you have some beautiful photographs to treasure..

Awwww, what lovely pics :o) Horrid that you had to hand the last one over but wouldn't it be great if it was your little peep come 'home' to show off its new found mummy trick to you both?

So sweet Jodi~ I've raised birds from the wild too. I had 4 at one time and they all lived with me until they were old enough to fly out on their own...
It's tough letting them go but I think if I were a bird I would want to fly free too~~

I cannot believe such cruelty! How could you do any harm to wild stock if you raised the little orphan?
We raised aturtle dove once and it has been a great experience, sh was lovely. We always referred at it as She.

Jodi, those pictures are wonderful. Its awful that you had to do that. Luckily, although we have laws in the UK they dont seem as strict. We take in all sorts of waifs from time to time, black birds, hedgehogs etc. Nature has a tough time as it is and needs the gentle folk to lend a helping hand.

I'd have been fuming. Such a daft law. I bet you were both like two proud parents and then in steps the law.
I once rescued some baby sparrows from my husbands mums garden. Its quite funny because she saves his dads pants as dusters and a pair were on the floor by the shed because he had been polishing his bikes. They all fell into the pants and had a soft landing... lol.
We drove for 50 miles to take them to an animal rescue. All the way there i kept them nice and warm under my top and wrapped in material but all the time making sure they could breathe. Once at the rescue they wrapped them up, put them in a box and closed the lid. There was me thinking they needed lots of air but in the box they went.
Only sparows i know but didnt want them to die and could never have left them. Hoping they lived and learned to fly.
I wonder when your new eggs will hatch?

A baby Quail, how sweet.... Isn't it a shame that you couldn't have let him go around your house...

Hi Joanna..
Yes...was my plan to raise her for as long as I could and let her fly (they don't fly to well) off when it was time.... wild birds are wonderful...and we sit each morning out back and listen to all the 'morning songs' from each of them...such sweet music!

Morning Julie...

Yes, very heartbreaking indeed...but we shared a moment together and I know I saved it's little baby body from badness that might be lurking... all was right with the world...

Hi Debie...

The rules do seem more strick in this state...I am sure that other states might be a tad less stringent...at least I was able to help a little...

It was my greatest hope to raise the quail 'nearby' ...but as I said...I always 'pretend' she has returned (or at least her offspring) each year....
